The 2019 Australian Invitational Cup took place at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre (PVRSC) the weekend of Saturday 8th June - Monday 10th June.

Australia's Part in Goalball History

Goalball first commenced in Australia in 1980 throughout New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC). Queensland (QLD) followed in 1982 and in 2000 Australian Capital Territory (ACT) adopted the sport.

First meetings were called in 1986 and 87 to promote and establish the formation of the National Goalball Association of Australia. A steering committee, headed by Nick Gleason (VIC), was formed on 4 April, 1987.

The first committee of the Australian National Goalball Association (ANGA) was formed shortly after in January of 1988 with Bailey Compton (NSW) as President. The official name of the association was changed to Goalball Australia in 1999.

In 1998, a composite Male ACT/QLD team competed for the first time during the National Championships. While a composite Female VIC/QLD team and NSW/VIC team competed on multiple occasions due to a slight struggle from lack in numbers.

There are currently five full members of Goalball Australia; New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. Tasmania joined in 1991 but did not continue on in following years. Australian Capital Territory became Associate Member in 2001. Goalball Australia (formerly ANGA) joined the Australian Blind Sports Federation (ABSF) in 1988. South Australia and Western Australia we added in 2012.

The first international Goalballl Tournament organised in Australia was called the "Oceania Goalball Championships" and was held in Sydney, Australia in 1989.

The first Australian Goalball team to compete on the world stage played in the 1980 Paralympic Games in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The first Australian Goalball team competed at the World Goalball Championships in Roermond, Holland in 1986, which organised by the International Blind Sporting Federation (IBSA) Goalball Committee. Both Men's and Women's teams ranked in the finals.

New Zealand became the first international team to compete in the Australian Championships during the 2003 National Championships in Canberra, ACT.
