Terry Kenaghan - Women's Coach

Whilst employed by the Royal Blind Society of NSW as an O & M Instructor Terry initiated  the formation of the RBS & Western Districts Social Athletics Club. This club was made up of predominantly blind and vision impaired persons seeking to get involved in sport of some sort.

Through this club many blind and vision impaired persons started training just to get fit and then moved onto fun runs and team events around Sydney and NSW including events such as the City to Surf, Sutherland to Surf and the Leeton Row-athon.

1975 -Terry was responsible for organising three NSW blind and vision impaired athletes being able to compete at the first Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (F.E.S.P.I.C.) held in Japan. Terry traveled to Japan with the three as a guide/escort and coach. The three athletes competed in a total of fifteen events and won 10 Gold Medals and 5 Silver medals between them.

1980 -Terry was selected as Australian Team Manager for the Blind section of the team for the Olympics for the Disabled and overall Assistant Team Manager for the entire team. During this trip Terry discovered a sport known as Goalball being played in various other countries around the world.

Goalball was recognised as the only team sport for the blind that is played throughout the rest of world. On returning home Terry found out more regarding this game called Goalball and started introducing it to athletes in NSW as an alternative sport.

1981 -Terry coached the NSW Goalball teams in the National Championships in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. During this period NSW has been the dominant State in Australia.

1986 -Terry was selected as Australian Goalball Manager and Coach for the World Championships held in Holland.

1987 -Terry Managed and Coached a selected Australian Goalball Team at the U.S. Nationals staged in New Mexico, U.S.A.

1988 -Terry was selected as Australian Goalball Manager and Coach for the Paralympics held in Korea.

1989 -Terry organised for Australia to host the U.S.A. Goalball Team and play a tournament in Sydney.

1990 - Terry was selected as Australian Goalball Coach for the World Championships to be staged in Canada but unfortunately had to withdraw.

1994 - Terry was selected as Australian Men's Team Goalball Coach for the F.E.S.P.I.C. Games staged in China. This team was made up of all novice competitors, who had NOT represented Australia previously, but despite this they won a BRONZE Medal

1995 -Terry was selected as Assistant Coach for the Australian Goalball Team for the Paralympics Qualifying tournament held in England.

1996 -Terry was selected as Ladies Coach for the Australian Goalball Team for the Paralympics held in Atlanta, U.S.A.

1998 -Terry has been selected as Ladies Coach for the Australian Goalball Team for the World Championships to be held in Madrid.

2000 Terry was coach of the Australian Women's Team at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.

Over this long period of time Terry has been involved as an administrator in the blind sports area. In 1986 Terry started and formed the Australian National Goalball Association (ANGA) and currently is an executive member. In past years Terry has been a member of the International Blind Sports Association (I.B.S.A.) Sub Committee for Goalball. Terry was also involved in the forming of the Australian Blind Sports Federation (A.B.S.F.) and is currently a Director for Goalball. Terry is also a founding member of the NSW Goalball Association and is currently the President. During this period Terry was also a member of the Blind Sporting Association of NSW and represented this organisation on many occasions at meetings etc.
